Getting to Belarus
Belarus is accessible by bus from Vilnius and Warsaw, by Belavia flights from non-EU hubs, and by car. International train services from Lithuania, Latvia and Poland have been suspended. This guide covers all options, booking links, and customs rules.
By Bus
The most convenient and affordable option from Vilnius or Warsaw
Vilnius → Minsk
Best option from the EU. Ecolines (8 daily), TOKS (6 daily). Passengers disembark for border checks at Kamenny Log / Medininkai.
Warsaw → Minsk
Minsktrans, Ecolines, Sindbad, FlixBus, TOKS. Crosses via Bruzgi / Kuźnica or Berestovitsa / Bobrowniki.
Riga → Minsk
Direct licences expired Feb 2026 after Latvia terminated bilateral transport agreements. Transfer in Vilnius via infobus.by as single ticket.

Minsk National Airport (MSQ) — 10 airlines, 39 airports, 14 countries
No EU, UK or Swiss airlines fly to Minsk; Belavia cannot fly to any EU/UK/Swiss airport.

- Vilnius (VNO) — 4h by bus. Many EU airlines fly to Vilnius; then bus to Minsk from the central bus station.
- Warsaw (WAW) — 7–11h by bus. All major EU carriers serve Warsaw. Buses to Minsk from Warsaw Zachodni.
- Riga (RIX) — ~7h by bus via Vilnius. Rail service to Minsk is suspended.
By Train
International passenger rail to Belarus is currently suspended
All international passenger train connections between Belarus and Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, and Ukraine have been suspended. No scheduled cross-border rail service is currently operating from EU/neighbouring countries.

Lithuania suspended bilateral rail services. No passenger trains operating.
Warsaw → Minsk
Poland suspended all passenger rail connections to Belarus.
Riga → Minsk
Latvia terminated bilateral rail transport agreements.
Kyiv → Minsk
All Belarus–Ukraine rail connections suspended. Border closed since Oct 30, 2024.
Domestic Belarusian Railways (БЧ) continues to operate normally within Belarus. Minsk has two major stations: Minsk-Passazhirsky (central) and Minsk-Severny. Check bcpt.by for domestic routes.
Driving
Insurance, BelToll transponder, and border crossing status
- Green Card insurance — mandatory for arrivals from EU, UK, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Ukraine. Buy before your trip or at the border (€5–50 depending on duration and vehicle type).
- Blue Card (from Russia) — if entering from Russia, the Green Card is not required. Instead, you need a Blue Card (синяя карточка) — the Russian equivalent of compulsory motor third-party liability insurance (OSAGO). It is normally already included with Russian vehicle insurance.
- BelToll transponder — mandatory for all non-EEU registered vehicles ≤3.5t on Belarusian toll roads. Register in advance at beltoll.by. OBU deposit: €50. Alternatively use the BelToll app.
- Vehicle documents — carry original ownership documents. If you are not the registered owner, you need a notarised power of attorney.
- Latvia ban — since July 2024, Latvia bans Belarusian-registered passenger vehicles from crossing into Latvia.
- Speed limits — Built-up areas: 60 km/h. Highway: 120 km/h. Rural roads: 90 km/h.
- Fuel — You may import a full tank + 10 extra litres duty-free.
Customs Rules
Duty-free limits and declaration requirements
A customs declaration form is mandatory for ALL arrivals and departures. Always complete it — even if you have nothing to declare.

Medical insurance
Mandatory for entry — buy online before your trip
- Medical insurance with a minimum coverage of €10,000 is mandatory for all visa-free foreign visitors entering Belarus.
- You can buy it online before your trip at bgs.by — the official Belarusian state insurer. The site is available in English, Russian, and Chinese, and is straightforward to navigate.
What this insurance actually covers
This policy only covers life-threatening emergencies. It does not work like standard travel health insurance — you cannot visit a clinic or a GP. In practice, you can only go to a hospital emergency room (skoraya pomoshch / скорая помощь), where doctors assess your condition and decide whether treatment is warranted. In our experience, if you arrive with a real problem you will almost always be seen and treated.
