Getting Around in Belarus
Belarus has well-developed urban transport: metro in Minsk, buses and trolleybuses across all cities, affordable monthly passes, and taxi apps that work without a Belarusian phone number.
You will need to read Cyrillic
All street names, metro stations, bus stops, and destination signs are in Russian/Belarusian using the Cyrillic alphabet. It is worth spending 20 minutes learning to read it — the alphabet has 33 letters and many are similar to Latin.
Most useful words to recognise at bus stops and metro:
Minsk Metro
The Minsk Metro is fast, clean, punctual, and the most efficient way to cross the city. It is the only metro in Belarus.
- Trains run from 05:30 to 01:00. Frequency: every 2–3 minutes in peak hours.
- Tickets can be purchased at ticket offices (kassa) inside every station, or at automatic machines.
- You can pay at the turnstile directly with a Belarusian contactless card or the Oplati app.
- Foreign contactless cards generally do not work at turnstiles — buy a token or paper ticket at the kassa.
- Station names are announced in Belarusian, Russian and English. Signs at transfer stations also indicate which line to follow. On the newer Green Line stations, ticket kiosks also display Chinese.
Buses, Trolleybuses & Trams
Every city in Belarus has an extensive bus network. Minsk also has trolleybuses (electric buses on overhead wires) and a tram line. All use the same ticketing system.
- Destination and route number are shown on the front of the vehicle. Knowing Cyrillic helps reading the destination.
- You can buy a single-ride ticket from the driver when boarding (small coins / small notes helpful).
- Tickets are also sold at kiosks near bus stops and in metro stations — usually slightly cheaper than from the driver.
- Oplati app: the most popular way to pay. Open the app, scan the QR code on board, and pay digitally. Works for bus, trolleybus and tram.
- Validate your ticket immediately after boarding by punching it in the validator (orange/yellow device on the pole). Inspectors check regularly.
A single monthly subscription covers all buses, trolleybuses, trams and the metro — unlimited rides on any combination. The most convenient option for anyone staying a full month or more. Available at metro station kassas and Minsktrans offices.
Taxis
All taxi services in Belarus operate via apps. There are no reliable street-hail taxis — always book through an app, which shows the price upfront and shares your location.
Most widely used. Available in English — easiest for foreigners. Accepts foreign cards that work in Belarus. Shows price and driver details before confirming.
Good coverage in Minsk and major cities. Competitive prices. Interface is in Russian — useful to know basic Cyrillic.
Popular budget option. Common in smaller cities and towns. Cash payment is the norm.
Tip: choose Cash on busy holiday nights
Normally, paying by card through the app is convenient and works well — including with foreign cards accepted in Belarus. However, on busy nights (New Year's Eve, major holidays, late weekend nights) a different situation can occur:
When your taxi slows down near a crowd, intoxicated people sometimes jump in and offer the driver a much larger amount in cash to take them instead. The driver accepts — and drives off, leaving you stranded. With a card payment active, the driver cannot release the ride request properly, so the app still shows your taxi as "on the way" and can continue deducting from your card while the driver has already abandoned you.
On busy nights: set payment to Cash before confirming the ride. If your driver abandons you, simply cancel and make a new request — no money lost.
- Always confirm the car model and plate number shown in the app before getting in.
- Prices are fixed by the app at booking time — no negotiation, no meter surprises.
- Tipping is not standard but appreciated. Round up to the nearest rouble for cash rides.
