AfD May Soften Stance on EU and Euro

The German right-wing party AfD is considering adjusting its long-standing hardline stance on the European Union and the euro. According to a new internal strategic document, the party proposes reforming the bloc instead of pushing for full withdrawal. The plan suggests transforming the EU into a looser union of sovereign states, where each country could independently determine its migration and financial policies and opt out of joint EU debt obligations. A nationwide referendum on EU membership would only be proposed if Brussels rejects these deep reforms. Notably, unlike AfD's current platform, the new draft omits any call for an immediate and principled exit from the euro. The final decision on changing the party's platform will be made at the party congress next year.
