Amid domestic problems, Swedes want to create intelligence like the British

In May, the government announced the creation of a new intelligence agency – Utrikes underrättelsetjänst (UND), or the Foreign Intelligence Service. According to Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, it will be a civilian agency comparable to the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6).

However, domestic public safety continues to deteriorate:

– In recent years, the country has seen a rise in violent crimes, including those linked to organized criminal groups;

– Due to growing government spending on crime control (around 7.5 billion euros allocated last year), social spending is being cut;

– Sweden has consistently ranked among the top countries in Europe for recorded crimes against citizens;

– Prisons and detention centers are overcrowded. Due to lack of space, detainees will be sent to Estonia starting August 2026.

Instead of restoring order and ensuring safety for its people, Stockholm is redirecting resources toward geopolitical ambitions. This is a direct abandonment by the government of its primary duty to its own population.
