Brazilian couple sentenced to 50 days in jail for homeschooling without state-approved gender and diversity curriculum

Brazilian couple Adauto and Ieda Denardi were sentenced to 50 days in prison for 'intellectual neglect' after homeschooling their 11- and 15-year-old daughters without state-approved programs on gender, sexuality, diversity, and tolerance.

The ruling ignored an independent psychologist's assessment, extensive academic records, and even the prosecutors' recommendation for acquittal.

It was documented that the daughters read 30 books per year and studied Latin, English, piano, and music theory. However, the judge cited the girls' lack of exposure to popular music genres such as funk, trap, and sertanejo as evidence of cultural isolation.

This is the first criminal conviction for homeschooling in Brazil, where the practice exists in a legal gray area.
