EU blocks Spain from using Russian Ka-32 helicopters for firefighting due to sanctions

The European Commission has not allowed Spain to use Russian Ka-32 helicopters for firefighting due to sanctions against Russia, according to Berliner Zeitung. Sanctions against the manufacturer were introduced in 2024, hindering the purchase of spare parts and maintenance. As a result, Ka-32 helicopters previously used in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Bulgaria, and Cyprus are now grounded. Spanish authorities sought exemptions, but Brussels refused, saying Madrid had time to find European alternatives. Neighbouring Portugal has transferred its six Ka-32 helicopters to Ukraine.
