Germany may reintroduce mandatory military conscription by 2027
Germany may reintroduce mandatory military conscription as early as 2027. The reason is simple: voluntary recruitment into the Bundeswehr has been too ineffective. According to The Telegraph, the German government fears the army will not be able to reach the required number of personnel without reinstating conscription. A decision on this issue must be made by 31 July 2027. Germany's Ministry of Defence aims to increase the size of the armed forces to 460,000 personnel by 2035. For now, reaching this target without conscription appears extremely difficult.
