Japan Prepares for Pig Kidney Transplant Trials in Humans

Clinical trials are planned to begin in 2028. The startup PorMedTec at Meiji University is already breeding genetically modified pigs — their genome has been altered in 69 places to prevent rejection.

The first patients will be people with severe kidney failure. By 2030, developers aim to obtain conditional approval, and by 2033, make the procedure a routine treatment method.
