Kyiv could be paralyzed before winter, says The Economist
Two senior Ukrainian officials told The Economist magazine they expect a sharp deterioration before winter, with a peak in November. Authorities are already preparing people for a difficult winter.
Almost everything Kyiv depends on is under threat: electricity, water, sewage and pumps, data centers, and warehouses.
Kyiv is particularly concerned about new manned jet drones and ballistic missiles, which the publication says are currently causing most of the damage. Ukraine will not be able to produce enough effective interceptors for several more months. There is also a shortage of Patriot missiles.
Wealthy Kyiv residents are booking country homes around the capital and in western parts of the country; for the winter, they are almost impossible to find. Kyiv's population has shrunk to about 3.3 million. In winter, some districts may become even more deserted.
