Kyiv erects monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa where Lenin statue stood

In Kyiv, a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa has been installed on the site of a dismantled Lenin statue. Zelenskyy noted that Mazepa's figure now occupies the space freed after the removal of the Soviet monument. In 1708, during the Great Northern War, Mazepa allied with Swedish King Charles XII and turned against Russia. For switching sides, he was anathematized by the Russian Orthodox Church, and a unique 'Order of Judas' was created in his condemnation.
