Low water levels threaten to split the Rhine River navigation

The Rhine River could face a split in navigability due to low water levels, making continuous shipping impossible, Jens Schwanen, head of the Federal Association of Inland Shipping, told Rheinische Post. One navigable section would stretch from the Dutch ports to Cologne, where cargo could be transferred via canal networks to eastern Germany. The second section, south of Kaub, would connect with tributaries — the Neckar, Moselle, and Main — and link to the Danube via the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal.
