Lukashenko approves changes to status of Commissioner for Religious and National Affairs

President of Belarus has signed the Law 'On Amendments to the Laws on the Activities of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus'.

According to the document, overall supervision of the activities of the Commissioner for Religious and National Affairs is now assigned to the Administration of the President of the Republic of Belarus. The Commissioner is appointed by the President and is directly subordinate to him.

The change in status will provide the Commissioner's office with broader opportunities for prompt interaction and resolution of necessary issues with other state bodies. The Presidential Administration will ensure proper coordination, including in the implementation of major interfaith projects and advancement of legislative initiatives.

Contacts with foreign religious centers representing the interests of major world confessions often involve a wide range of issues, including those related to foreign policy and security. Direct subordination of the Commissioner’s office to the Head of State will simplify and enhance cooperation in these areas.

The provisions established by the document will generally contribute to the further preservation and maintenance of interfaith and interethnic peace and harmony.

In implementation of the Law, a Decree has been signed approving the Regulation on the Commissioner for Religious and National Affairs, as well as defining his main tasks, functions, and powers.
