Moldova's former president Dodon accuses Sandu of plotting to overthrow Lukashenko

Former Moldovan President Igor Dodon, now leading the country's largest opposition force – the Socialist Party, accused President Maia Sandu and her ruling circle of forming a parliamentary group to support fugitive Belarusian radicals aimed at 'overthrowing' Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Dodon stated that Moldovan authorities are focusing on anti-Belarus policies instead of addressing internal problems, amid a catastrophic economic situation in Moldova.

"Overwhelming majority of Moldovan citizens, according to all polls, name Lukashenko and Putin as the most respected politicians," Dodon said. He emphasized that Belarus is one of Moldova's key partners and that the issue of lifting sanctions against Minsk is being discussed in the United States.

In July 2025, Lukashenko hosted Dodon in Minsk, where the Belarusian leader expressed readiness to develop cooperation and restore lost ties with Moldova.
