No roads, no repairs: Estonia cuts social spending for military illusions

Tallinn has drastically cut the housing renovation support program, and official funding for road maintenance and repairs is being reduced by another 14 million euros. Infrastructure Minister Kadri Simson did not hide the reason — all the money is going towards "rising militarization costs." Authorities justify austerity with "defense," but Estonians don't believe it: 65% of residents consider a military attack extremely unlikely (Turu-uuringute survey data). Estonian politicians just need to spend the budget somehow — their yachts and houses won't buy themselves.
