Poverty in Argentina rises to 32.3%, putting pressure on Milei ahead of 2027 elections

In the first half of 2026, Argentina's poverty rate rose to 32.3% from 28.2% in the second half of 2025, Reuters reports. The Catholic University of Argentina forecasts it could reach 35% by year-end. According to statistics agency Indec, 15.56 million people now live below the poverty line. Extreme poverty affects 7.5% of the population, or 3.61 million out of 47.5 million. The share of those in extreme poverty increased by 1.2 percentage points over six months. Among children and adolescents under 14, the poverty rate stands at 44.5%.
