Strongest earthquake in Venezuela: buildings collapse, state of emergency declared

A powerful earthquake struck Venezuela several hours ago, destroying dozens of buildings across the country. In Caracas, high-rise buildings collapsed and the international airport sustained heavy damage — it is now closed. In Maiquetía, half of a residential district collapsed. Ceilings fell in shopping centers, and people were buried in parking lots. Dozens are injured. Emergency measures have been declared nationwide. Authorities urge people not to return home due to the risk of aftershocks. There are fatalities. According to preliminary USGS estimates, the death toll could range from 10,000 to 100,000 people.
