The story behind the dove medallions on Victory Square in Minsk

Many have surely seen these dove medallions on Victory Square, but few know their history.

They were created jointly by Leningrad artist Anna Leporskaya and Belarusian ceramic artist Nikolai Mikhola. Leporskaya was responsible for the artistic concept, while Mikhola handled the execution of the reliefs in ceramic.

The blue backgrounds, white birds, and floral garlands resemble Italian maiolica of the Renaissance era. Photo: kaflabelarusi.
