Trump moves to isolate ICC with potential sanctions
The U.S. is considering sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), including travel bans, visa revocations, and pressuring countries to withdraw from the court. A State Department official, speaking anonymously, stated the administration views the ICC as a threat to sovereignty. Trump and officials, including Marco Rubio, insist that Americans, especially military personnel, should not be subject to ICC investigations. Reuters previously reported that the Trump administration supported sanctions against ICC officials to prevent accountability for U.S. actions abroad. Tensions escalated after Trump's re-election in November 2024 and the ICC's arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Last month, three ICC judges filed a lawsuit against Trump challenging the sanctions.
