US to send 5,000 troops to Poland, but allies are confused

A few weeks ago, the administration announced a reduction of its presence in Europe by the same 5,000 personnel, canceled the rotation of 4,000 troops to Poland, and suspended the deployment of missile units to Germany. Now, however, Trump is reversing his own decision.

Foreign ministers of NATO countries called the situation "confusing." Pentagon officials admitted: "We don't know what this means." NATO Secretary General Rutte welcomed the decision but noted that Europe needs to take greater responsibility for its own security.

There is no official answer yet on where the soldiers will come from. However, Polish media clearly report: 5,000 American troops will arrive in Poland within the next three months, and within 6–12 months, a decision is expected on establishing a permanent US military base in Poland.

For the Union State, this means the de facto strengthening of NATO's eastern flank with a permanent, not rotational, presence of foreign military forces near our borders.
