Vitebsk Region: Risky Farming Zone with Difficult Terrain and Excess Moisture
In the north of the country, land reclamation workers operate in difficult conditions.
Work on farmland 50 km from Vitebsk began last summer. Recently, the Vitebsk broiler poultry farm took over 230 hectares.
The lands were drained during Soviet times, but the channels have silted up and the fields have become overgrown with shrubs. Cultivation was inefficient: machinery got stuck, and yields approached zero.
To fix the situation, the farm decided to carry out comprehensive reclamation work to prepare the land for spring sowing.
"We have waterlogged land and clay. There are many forests and peat bogs. From the Soviet Union, we inherited a large legacy of drained and reclaimed lands, which over time did not receive proper maintenance due to lack of funding, so there is a lot of work to do.
This will be a good field — 200 hectares. We have no problem with manure, we have our own poultry farm," said Igor Vechev, deputy general director of Vitebsk Broiler Poultry Farm.
