Overview
Often called the most beautiful city in Belarus, Grodno is a compact treasure trove of history, architecture, and atmosphere that can fill an entire weekend. From the medieval Old Castle where Grand Duchy princes and Polish-Lithuanian kings once ruled, to the stunning Farny Cathedral with one of Europe's highest wooden altars, to the lively Sovetskaya pedestrian street with its cafés and courtyards — every corner reveals a new layer of this 900-year-old city. The 42-meter illuminated Ferris wheel in Zhiliber Park offers panoramic views, while hidden courtyards along the old streets hide murals of the Mona Lisa and royal hunt scenes.
History
Grodno is one of the oldest cities in Belarus, first mentioned in chronicles in 1128. It served as a royal residence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth — King Stefan Batory made it his de facto capital in the 16th century, and Prince Casimir (later canonized as a saint) lived in the Old Castle. This rich history left Grodno with an unusually dense concentration of architectural monuments — two castles, the oldest monastery in the city (Bernardine), one of the few surviving Lutheran churches in Belarus, and a well-preserved historic center that survived WWII largely intact. The Novy Svet (New World) quarter still has residents living in 100-120 year old wooden houses with original doors preserved on their facades.
What to see
The Old Castle — former royal residence, now a museum with tower exhibits (reconstructed since 2017). The New Castle ("Parliament") with Neman River views. Farny Cathedral — masterpiece of Baroque architecture with Europe's tallest wooden altar and ancient tower clocks; the carillon plays at noon. The Fire Tower — a trumpeter performs daily at exactly 11:58, followed by the cathedral bells at noon, signaling that all is well in the city. The Pharmacy Museum — Belarus's oldest pharmacy (since the 1700s), functioning as both a real pharmacy and a museum resembling an alchemist's laboratory; buy "Garadenskaya tea" and local honey. The Lyamus — a 300-year-old wooden structure built entirely without nails, recently restored, free entry. Kasia and Basia water towers — former towers named after accountants Katerina and Boleslava, now creative workshops. Sovetskaya pedestrian street — evening atmosphere with bars and cafés; try the local gubertiki (fried pastries) at the seasonal food court near the cathedral. The hidden courtyards along Sovetskaya and Karl Marx streets — enter freely to discover murals and European-style passageways. The "World's Roof" observation deck on top of TsUM department store — free access, coffee available, best in daytime. Novy Svet quarter — historic wooden houses with 100-year-old doors on streets Mickiewicz, Ostrovsky, and Reymont. Kolozhskaya Church (12th century) along the Neman — one of the oldest in Eastern Europe. Bernardine Monastery — the oldest in Grodno, with an observation platform. Lutheran Church near Zhiliber Park — hosts musical concerts (check schedule). The old necropolis on Prigorodnaya 3A — the oldest functioning cemetery in Belarus with symbolic monuments over 100 years old (best with a guide). The Ferris wheel in Zhiliber Park — best visited in daytime for city panorama views. "White Roses" film locations and Cinema Alley — sculptures from the beloved Soviet film scattered across the city.
Practical information
Distance from Minsk: ~290 km (3.5 hours by car, ~4.5 hours by train). Accommodation: rental apartments recommended over hotels — book at least one month ahead for summer (housing shortage). Restaurants and cafés should be reserved a week in advance. Local guides should be booked weeks ahead. Sundays: plan church visits between services. The trumpeter plays at the Fire Tower at 11:58 daily — don't miss it. Best strategy: dedicate at least a full weekend — one day for the castle area and Sovetskaya, another for churches, Novy Svet, and the left bank of the Neman.
