Overview
An honest medieval castle — walls, towers, and an open courtyard without later palace additions — Lida Castle is one of the oldest stone fortifications in Belarus. Founded as an anti-Crusader fortress, it offers an authentic experience of medieval military architecture.
History
Built in the early 14th century by Grand Duke Gediminas as part of a defensive line against Crusader raids from the west, the castle played a key role in the military history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Severely damaged by Swedish forces during the Northern War in the early 18th century, it underwent major restoration in the 2010s that returned its two towers and walls to their medieval appearance.
What to see
The restored towers with archaeological and historical exhibits. The open courtyard used for medieval festivals and reenactments. Reconstructed period interiors showing medieval life and defense. Regular cultural events and knight tournaments.
