Overview
An awe-inspiring industrial landscape turned tourist attraction, the Mikashevichi granite quarry stretches 3 kilometers long, 2 kilometers wide, and plunges 150 meters deep into the earth. Groundwater cascading down the quarry walls creates 20-meter waterfalls, while 90-ton BELAZ dump trucks navigate the terraced roads below like toys. When mining eventually ends, the quarry is expected to fill with water and become a "Belarusian Maldives" — turquoise lakes surrounded by granite cliffs.
History
The "Granit" mining facility has been extracting stone here for over 50 years, producing construction materials that built much of modern Belarus. The quarry has recently opened to organized tourism, offering visitors a rare chance to witness large-scale mining operations up close — an experience available in very few places in Europe.
