Overview
A rare and striking example of defensive Gothic architecture, the Church of St. Michael in Synkovichi was built to serve both as a house of worship and a fortress. Its four corner towers, arrow slits, and thick walls give it a castle-like appearance unique among Belarusian churches.
History
Built in the early-to-mid 15th century, during a turbulent period when communities needed their churches to double as defensive strongholds. Spiral staircases inside the towers lead to a defensive gallery level from which defenders could repel attackers through narrow arrow slits still visible in the walls.
What to see
The fortress-like exterior with four round corner towers. The arrow slits and defensive features. The atmospheric Gothic interior. One of the best-preserved medieval defensive churches in the region.
