Overview
At 60 meters tall, the red-brick Neo-Gothic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Vidzy is one of the tallest churches in Belarus. Built in 1914, it was damaged by artillery during World War I almost immediately after completion — and the shell marks are still visible on its facade today. Inside the walls, unexploded shells remain embedded as physical reminders of the war, deliberately preserved during restoration as historical witnesses.
History
The church was constructed in 1909–1914, just in time to be caught in the path of World War I. Artillery bombardment damaged the facade, and the scars of those impacts were never removed — they remain visible on the red brick exterior. During Soviet times the building was repurposed, but it has since been restored as an active Catholic parish, with the deliberate decision to preserve the war damage as part of the building's story.
What to see
The 60-meter red-brick Gothic tower visible for kilometers. WWI artillery damage on the facade. Unexploded shells preserved inside the walls. The restored interior. One of the tallest and most dramatic churches in Belarus.
