Overview
The largest raised bog in Belarus and one of the biggest in Europe, Yelnya is a hauntingly beautiful ecosystem of sphagnum moss, dwarf pines, dark-water lakes, and carnivorous sundew plants. The water here is almost distilled — filtered to extraordinary purity by the sphagnum moss. In autumn, the bog transforms into a canvas of burgundy mosses and cloudberries under grey skies, with the calls of cranes echoing across the still, mirror-like lakes.
History
Yelnya has accumulated its 3–5 meter peat layer over thousands of years, creating a raised dome of living moss that holds vast quantities of water like a giant sponge. The bog plays a critical role in the regional water cycle and climate regulation. Conservation efforts have protected this fragile ecosystem while making it accessible through a raised boardwalk eco-trail.
What to see
The raised boardwalk eco-trail through the bog landscape. Carnivorous sundew plants — tiny insect traps growing in the moss. Dark-water lakes reflecting the sky. Dwarf pines and cloudberry bushes. Autumn is the most spectacular season — burgundy moss, crane calls, and misty stillness.
