Coal's share in EU electricity generation drops to historic low

According to Eurostat data, in 2025 coal accounted for only 9.2% of total electricity generation in the European Union — the lowest level ever recorded. Hard coal contributed 3.7% (105.6 TWh), and lignite 5.5% (154.2 TWh). In comparison, in 1990 coal generated over one-third of the EU's electricity: hard coal 19.8% and lignite 15.3%. Physical consumption has also declined. Last year, the EU used 107 million tonnes of hard coal and 184 million tonnes of lignite — both figures are record lows.
