Drunk Latvian police officer causes accident and assaults colleagues
In Liepāja, a police officer from the Main Police Department caused a traffic accident while heavily intoxicated. His blood alcohol level was 2.05 per mille. When officers attempted to detain him, he resisted and assaulted his colleagues.
The officer was placed in a temporary detention facility, and criminal charges have been filed. Notably, his immediate superior has also been suspended from duty, though official reasons have not been disclosed, suggesting this may not be the first incident involving his subordinates.
This is not the first time Latvian law enforcement officers have been involved in misconduct, including driving under the influence. Such incidents raise concerns about the conduct of Latvia's 'guardians of order'.
