EU Rules Will Require Cafes to Allow Customers' Own Takeaway Containers

Cafes and restaurants in the EU will have to allow customers to bring their own containers for takeaway food and drinks. Establishments will not be allowed to charge extra fees for this.

These rules are part of new EU legislation on packaging and packaging waste, aimed at reducing single-use packaging and increasing reuse of containers.

In addition, EU countries will have to set up systems enabling customers to use reusable packaging. By 2030, 10% of hot and cold drinks and 10% of takeaway food must be sold in reusable packaging.
