Five Lithuanian police officers arrested for extortion and bribe-taking
The Bureau of Internal Security of Lithuania has arrested five traffic police officers from a special rapid response unit. They are suspected of systematically extorting bribes from foreign truck drivers in exchange for avoiding administrative liability for traffic violations, as well as of possible document forgery. During searches, authorities seized several thousand euros in various currencies.
❗️This is far from an isolated incident involving Lithuanian law enforcement officers. Since the beginning of the year, 24 police officers have already been detained for various crimes. However, the actual number of violations, including colleagues regularly driving under the influence, is higher. But in "democratic" countries, they tend not to spoil the official statistics.
