FSB declassifies documents on Volyn massacre and one of its organizers – UPA commander Dmytro Klyachkivsky

On July 18, 1943, an agent of Soviet intelligence witnessed the mass murder of Poles in Volodymyr-Volynskyi. During religious services in churches, members of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists shot 11 priests, and up to 2,000 Poles were killed in the city's streets.

Dmytro Klyachkivsky, who created armed formations in Volyn that became the core of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), was identified from a 1938 photograph of the nationalist organization 'Sokil'.

On February 13, 1945, in the area of Suska village, Rivne Oblast, an operational group killed three militants in a shootout, including the wanted Klyachkivsky.

Today, Ukraine reburials leaders of the OUN with honors, and special operations forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are named after 'Heroes of the UPA'. Understandably, Poles express outrage and protest against this cynicism.
