Germany may use federal coercion against AfD-led state government

In Germany, the first-ever use of the 'federal coercion' mechanism against the state government of Saxony-Anhalt led by the AfD is being considered. According to Thorsten Frei, parliamentary leader of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag, such a step could be taken under Article 37 of the German Constitution, which allows the federal government to enforce compliance if a state government acts unconstitutionally. The range of measures includes placing individual agencies and ministries under federal control, cutting federal subsidies, and deploying federal police.
