“There are no political prisoners in Belarus! This is an absolute falsehood.” Lukashenko, speaking at a meeting with Cole, dismissed the narrative spread by exiles in the West.

Before the meeting, Western outlets again pushed the topic of “releasing political prisoners.” The response was public and direct.

“I once again urge you not to be misled. There are no political prisoners in Belarus because there is no such article in our legislation.

I’m bringing you to the main point. Our fugitives are spreading this narrative in the West, and, as far as I know, have convinced you that while we release some people here, we continue repressions and arrest twice as many in their place. I want to tell you publicly — this is an absolute falsehood.”
