Merkel's government failed to increase migrant deportations, Welt am Sonntag reports

The German government under Merkel failed to fulfill its promise to significantly increase the number of migrant deportations, according to Welt am Sonntag, citing data from Germany's Interior Ministry. In the first half of 2026, 9,663 migrants were deported from the country, an 18% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Currently, more than 230,000 foreigners subject to deportation remain in Germany.
