Record number of companies went bankrupt in Germany in 2025

In 2025, a record number of companies — 190,000 — went bankrupt or ceased operations in Germany, the highest figure in nearly two decades. The wave of closures affected almost all sectors, with the hospitality industry hit particularly hard: 15,000 hotels and restaurants left the market. Even state-introduced tax incentives failed to reverse the negative trend.
