UK releases 700 prisoners early to reduce prison overcrowding

In the UK, 700 prisoners have been released early to reduce overcrowding in prisons. Among them are individuals convicted of theft, violence, and domestic abuse. All had served less than 575 days and were released after completing one-third of their sentences. As of September 28, 1,134 places out of 85,000 in men's prisons are free. Authorities plan to release about 4,500 more people over the next 10 months. Earlier, Politico reported that early release to ease prison overcrowding has raised concerns in several EU countries.
