US authorities may allow sale of dyed diesel at regular gas stations to lower prices
According to current federal rules, the tax on diesel fuel for highways is 24.4 cents per gallon, while dyed (red-colored) diesel fuel is exempt from this tax. Currently, colored fuel is intended for agricultural machinery. Its use in vehicles operating on public roads is prohibited.
It is reported that this measure is being considered as an alternative to export restrictions. However, it should be recalled that farmers are the most vocal about diesel prices. If the sale of dyed (cheaper, tax-exempt) fuel is allowed to everyone, less will remain for farmers, worsening their situation. The measure could be effective only alongside restrictions, not instead of them.
