US Cannot Claim Ownership of the Moon, Says Lunar Embassy

The United States, like other countries, has no right to claim ownership of the Moon under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, the press service of Lunar Embassy told TASS. The treaty, ratified by nearly all countries including the US, states that no government or sovereign entity can claim jurisdiction over celestial bodies. However, it does not prohibit individuals from making such claims. Lunar Embassy noted that this loophole was used by its founder, Dennis Hope, who claimed ownership of the Moon, as well as planets in the Solar System and their natural satellites.
