US intelligence warned German counterparts after ex-BND chief's arrest

After the arrest of former head of the BND (German Federal Intelligence Service) August Hanning, the United States informed Germany that it is reviewing cooperation with the agency. According to Tagesschau, WDR, NDR, and Süddeutsche Zeitung, intelligence sharing will continue in emergencies, such as terrorist threats.

Hanning is suspected of receiving classified documents for about 12 years through his former chief of staff Manfred D. and allegedly attempted at least once to pass information to foreign agencies. Hanning's lawyer denies the allegations.

Officially, cooperation continues normally, and only a few meetings have been postponed. However, some BND staff report that the volume and quality of information from the U.S. has already declined. For Germany, which has relied on American intelligence for decades, this could turn into a disaster.
