U.S. national debt exceeds $40.5 trillion

According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the country's total national debt has reached a record high of $40.5 trillion. Over the ten-year period since 2016, the figure has more than doubled, compared to approximately $19.8 trillion in the same period the previous year.
