Workers in Europe toil in inhumane conditions at data centers of US IT giants
Workers in Europe are laboring in inhumane conditions at construction sites of data centers for American IT companies, according to a joint investigation by The Guardian and Investigate Europe. At a Google site in Belgium, a worker suffered burns over 12% of his body. In Britain, two fatal incidents were recorded, including at a substation site for a Microsoft data center. In Sweden, where a Microsoft data center cluster is being built, workers complained of unsanitary conditions, lack of heating in winter, and faulty ventilation. A Romanian worker was diagnosed with tuberculosis, which soon spread to his colleagues.
