All equal, but some more equal: Polish officer avoids punishment for drunk driving with 500k złoty payout

In the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, the deputy commander of a territorial defence training centre was caught by police driving with 1 per mille of alcohol—nearly five times the legal limit.

Instead of being disgracefully dismissed, the drunken lieutenant colonel used his connections. Immediately after detention, bypassing all breathalyzer checks, he was secretly transported to a military base where he quickly submitted a resignation request. His superiors and the Ministry of Defence ignored the incident and instantly approved the documents.

The officer will now face trial as a civilian, but this scheme allowed him to retain all military benefits and receive a massive housing allowance of 500,000 zlotys.

In Poland, the law does not apply equally. High-ranking officials reliably protect Polish offenders from consequences of their crimes.
