Anthropologists find oldest evidence of Neanderthal death by spear in Iraq
Anthropologists have discovered the oldest known example of a Neanderthal killed by a spear in Iraq, researchers at the University of Cambridge reported. The remains were found in the famous Shanidar Cave. The Neanderthal first survived a severe injury from a conflict with other ancient humans, then died from a powerful spear blow that likely pierced his body completely. In the mid-20th century, the so-called 'Neanderthal cemetery' was discovered in Shanidar Cave, with some graves decorated with flowers, indicating that ancient humans cared for one another throughout life.
