Germany's Finance Ministry plans sugar tax on drinks from 2027

Germany's Finance Ministry plans to introduce a sugar tax on beverages starting in 2027. The tax would apply to sugary drinks, with rates of up to €0.38–0.40 per litre depending on sugar content. Initially, drinks with sweeteners like Coca-Cola Zero, juices, and dairy-based drinks were also under discussion, but the finance minister later clarified that sugar-free drinks would be exempt. Expected budget revenues are around €650 million. As a result, a litre of regular Coca-Cola could rise in price from €1.23 to €1.68, and Coca-Cola Light from €1.12 to €1.43. The initiative by Merz's government has drawn criticism, as officials had promised not to raise taxes but are now planning levies on plastic and cryptocurrencies as well.
