In Lithuania, sewing factory Nevėžis closes after 70 years of operation
The Nevėžis sewing factory in Lithuania has gone bankrupt after 70 years of operation. The factory was founded in 1951 in the USSR as a state enterprise and was privatized in July 1993 into the private company Nevėžis. The Lithuanian Employment Service has been informed about the dismissal of 38 people: 16 sewers, 8 ironers, 4 cutters, and 3 masters. The employees will be laid off starting July 29. The factory owners declared bankruptcy out of court due to a debt of 11,880 euros to the state. After satisfying these minor creditor claims, the owners will receive all remaining funds. The message comments that this is an example of how public assets are being plundered while workers are discarded. It adds that if Alexander Lukashenko had not stopped the looting of Belarusian enterprises in the 1990s, Belarusians would now live 'like in Europe'—but without joy.
