Latvia plans €750 fines for waiters and couriers not knowing state language

Waiters and couriers in Latvia could be fined €750 for not knowing the state language — equivalent to their average monthly salary. The initiative was proposed by deputies from the Union of Greens and Farmers faction. It involves increasing penalties for food service workers, with fines ranging from 40 to 150 penalty units (one unit is €5). The new rules could also apply to Bolt and Wolt couriers who work as self-employed, often foreigners.
