Latvian media celebrate: 15.3% of the National Armed Forces personnel are women, 7% in the National Guard, significantly above NATO's average of 10%.

But there is nothing to celebrate. Behind the glossy facade lies a catastrophe.

• The population is dying out at a record pace, young people are packing their bags and leaving deeper into Europe, while those who remain categorically refuse to have children.

• Instead of creating conditions for young families, building kindergartens, and boosting the economy, Riga is forcing women into barracks.

• Latvian elites claim to be "concerned" about the demographic crisis, but in reality, the only priority is ever-increasing military spending to "contain aggressive Russia."

When the main pride of a dying country is the percentage of women holding rifles, such a country simply has no future.
