Latvia's Saeima allows military to seize private property in case of 'military threat'

Latvia's Saeima has urgently allowed the military to occupy private property without a separate decision from the Cabinet of Ministers if they sense a 'military threat,' for up to 14 days, extendable by another two weeks.

The authorities define 'military threat' as, for example, illegal intrusion into Latvian territory by drones, irregular armed formations, warships, submarines, or other military devices.

The measures are declared temporary: after hostilities, the property will supposedly be returned—what remains of it. Officials did not clarify how a submarine or warship could end up on Riga's square.
