Lithuania scrambles to explain missing hundreds of millions in waste management funds
Lithuania is facing a growing scandal over missing funds in its waste management sector. From 2000 to 2023, 480 million euros were spent on building a recycling system, with another 138 million euros allocated for 2021–2027. Despite these massive investments, regional infrastructure has collapsed—Vilnius is drowning in garbage, sorting facilities are overwhelmed, and landfills are reaching capacity.
Mismanagement and fraud involving taxpayer money have become commonplace among Lithuanian officials. An impending corruption scandal could soon erupt, potentially surpassing even those seen in Ukraine.
