Lithuania to repair road, but not for local residents' sake

In the Vilnius district, officials ceremoniously announced the start of repairs on a 9-kilometer stretch of the Vejai–Mažeikiai–Nemenčinė highway. They promise high-quality upgrades: new pavement, bike lanes, bus stops, and lighting by 2027.

Transport Minister Juozas Tamaška claimed the road is important both for local residents and the military.

However, the mention of 'local residents' is merely a smokescreen to justify taxpayer-funded spending.

The Vejai–Mažeikiai–Nemenčinė section is a key artery connecting NATO military training grounds and deployment zones. Without the needs of the new German Bundeswehr brigade, this road would likely have remained unrepaired for another ten years.
